It’s been a long week in some respects, we’ve been through a few rounds of Eproofs to ensure everything looks the way we want it to in the final book. Inevitably I spot something new and small, but just annoying enough to want it changed every time a new proof comes through, and then we have to wait for the next one.
Last night I signed off on the final Eproof of Eden‘s Alternative to Appeasement, and ordered approval copies for Malcolm and me to assess. We’re very excited to have print books in our hands and to see how it looks in the flesh. We don’t know precisely how long they will take to arrive, but hopefully by the time I’m writing next week’s update I’ll have seen a copy.
This means that my projected publication date of 11th May last week still looks quite feasible, provided we’re happy with how the first print copies turn out.
So how will I be able to order my copy?
As this is our first book, all of this is something of a learning curve for us, and so what we expect to happen and what actually happens may diverge a little in practice. Nevertheless, I thought I was about time I talked a little about the plans we have in place at the moment, on the understanding that some details may change.
There are three main ways you will be able to buy our print books:
Through book retailers
We expect our books to be available to order through book retailers. While they aren’t likely to be on the shelves of your local chain or indie bookshop, they will be available to order through them. Similarly, our books should be available through online retailers, including Amazon, Bookshop.org, Barnes and Noble, Waterstones, and Kinokuniya. Once Eden’s Alternative to Appeasement is available to order we’ll post some links, but you should also be able to find it through any of these sites’ internal search functions.
Directly through Ingram using our special discount link
Once the book is available we’ll setup a discount link to order Eden’s Alternative to Appeasement directly from our distributors, Ingram. For many readers this will be cheaper than ordering from a third party. Ingram charge us a small fee for this, but it is less than the discount at which we supply to bookshops and other third party retailers.
While we will be offering a discount for purchases made this way, it’s possible you will get a better overall deal from a third-party retailer, depending on how postage and local taxes are respectively handled where you live.
Directly through us
While we are not currently planning to convert our site to handle e-commerce at scale, it will be possible to order books from us directly. This may evolve over time, particularly as we publish more titles, but our initial expectation is that this will be a service available for customers looking to buy multiple copies (whether of a single book, or — later on — single copies of several of our titles) at a discount.
What about Ebooks?
Ebooks will be available of our titles and you’ll be able to buy them using the first two methods above. We don’t currently have fixed plans to sell ebooks directly, but we’re considering having the option to buy our books as pdfs from our site.
That’s it for this week, hopefully we’ll have more to share about how to buy Eden’s Alternative to Appeasement next week. In the meantime, if you’re feeling inspired to submit your own book proposal, please do get in touch at proposals@tbarnpress.com.
