Seafaring

Water covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface. The boundaries of many countries are defined by the sea, rivers, or lakes.

For most of human existence travelling by water has been easier than any other means, especially over long distances.

To this day the vast majority of international trade is carried by sea.

For much of history and to the present day, navies have been an essential part of strategic power projection.

Most cities and many smaller conurbations are founded on the banks of rivers.

Navigable water was, and often still is, a defining factor in the viability of human settlements.

Under this theme we’re excited to see books that look at the relationships between people and the sea, whether travel, commerce, military, resource extraction, piracy, or any number of other avenues.
